One of the common ailments experienced by dogs is kennel cough. It is usually not a life-threatening disease but it can lead to serious problems when left untreated. Also, dogs tend to feel anxious, irritable and restless because of the discomfort brought by the condition. But how do you know that your canine pet is suffering from kennel cough?

Below are some of the symptoms of kennel cough:

Hacking cough- Dogs give off a distinct sound when coughing, and it usually sounds like a dry, vomiting-like cough. When the dog coughs you can feel that his body’s frame is shaking and he seems like he’s about to throw up.

Phlegm emissions- A sign of kennel cough is when the dog produces a gagging sound from the throat, then spits phlegm as he coughs. You can also see the phlegm discharge in his sleeping area so better check his bed out.

Recurring fever- Together with the hacking cough is fever, thus it is recommended that you get your dog’s temperature once you notice him coughing. If he has fever then it’s a sign that he’s in a bad condition and has to be taken to the vet immediately to receive treatment.

Lack of alertness and cheerfulness- Dogs are naturally happy and alert, and you can tell that your dog’s sick if he is quiet, weak and passive. He would just sulk in a corner the whole day and can even get irritated when noticed. This only means that he’s not feeling well and is pain.

If and when you find these kennel cough symptoms on your pet dog, have him taken to the veterinarian immediately so that his condition can be diagnosed and treated right away. He may not be actually suffering from kennel cough but with the cough and fever alone, it already means that he’s suffering from a respiratory problem that can lead to more serious health problems.

By giving your dog the right treatment for kennel cough, it is guaranteed that your pet will become stronger and less prone to diseases in the future. Thus, before the condition fully takes charge of your dog’s health, have him taken to the vet so that he can receive treatment immediately.

Kennel cough can not only lead to major complications, it can also be contagious and may affect the health of other dogs. It is thus important to have your pet treated immediately so that his condition won’t go worse; it is to prevent your other pet dogs, from getting the disease.
